Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

RDP, SMB, SSH, WinRM, VNC and database ports reachable from the internet are among the most used ransomware entry points.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. In FMC (or cdFMC): Policies > Access Control > edit the policy > edit the rule > restrict Source Networks to known addresses, move the access behind the remote access VPN, or delete the rule. Remove the matching static NAT under Devices > NAT. Save, Deploy.
  2. In FDM: Policies > Access Control > edit the rule > Source Networks; Policies > NAT, then Deploy.

Command line

This analyzer version writes no command text for this control. The steps above are the remediation it offers.

How to confirm the fix

  • On the FTD CLI (read only): show running-config access-list CSM_FW_ACL_ | include 3389|445, and confirm the line is gone or restricted.

Limits

  • No limitation is recorded for this control beyond the one that applies to all of them: it reads a configuration export.
