Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

The names the firewall's own services need (content and license updates, WildFire, external dynamic lists, FQDN address objects, server profiles) are configured to resolve through this one server. If it stops answering, nothing else is configured to answer, and the features that depend on those names stop updating.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. Add a secondary DNS server under Device, Setup, Services, preferably one on a different network path from the primary.

Command line

PAN-OS CLI

set deviceconfig system dns-setting servers secondary <second-dns-server>

An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.

Read it back

show deviceconfig system dns-setting
Values to fill in1
<second-dns-server>
The address of a second DNS server, different from the first and preferably reached over another path

How to confirm the fix

  • Confirm both servers answer queries from the management interface or the service route the device uses for DNS.

Limits

  • A device that takes its DNS servers from DHCP on the management interface writes none, and is recorded as not written rather than judged.
  • On a template stack the first template, in the stack's order, that writes either the servers or a DNS proxy object decides which one the firewalls use.
  • On a Panorama each template stack is judged as its firewalls receive it: its own settings first, then its members in order. A stack holding a template this file lacks is recorded rather than passed.
