Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
Authentication policy decides who reaches the resources behind it. With a single factor configured, a password stolen or guessed is enough to pass the challenge.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Enable multi-factor authentication on the profile (Device, Authentication Profile, Factors) with an MFA server profile, or use an identity provider that enforces a second factor.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI, standalone firewall, vsys1
set vsys vsys1 authentication-profile <authentication-profile> multi-factor-auth mfa-enable yesset vsys vsys1 authentication-profile <authentication-profile> multi-factor-auth factors <server-profile>
An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show vsys vsys1 authentication-profile <authentication-profile>Values to fill in2
- <authentication-profile>
- The authentication profile to attach
- <server-profile>
- The server profile to use
Before you type it1
- The factor is an MFA server profile (Device, Server Profiles, Multi Factor Authentication). Users matching the rule are asked for it at their next challenge.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm a user matching the rule is asked for the second factor.
Limits
- A profile that authenticates through a SAML identity provider, RADIUS, TACACS+ or the Cloud Authentication Service may add a second factor on that server, which this file does not show; those are recorded rather than judged.
- A multi-factor setting written unreadably or as a template variable is recorded rather than judged.
Compliance references
No benchmark recommendation is mapped to this control in this version.
