Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

PAP sends the password in clear text inside RADIUS; CHAP, MS-CHAPv1, EAP-MD5 and LEAP can be cracked offline from a captured exchange. A device that offers them lets credentials be stolen.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. In ISE: Policy > Policy Elements > Results > Authentication > Allowed Protocols > edit the service and clear PAP/ASCII, CHAP, MS-CHAPv1, EAP-MD5, LEAP, weak EAP ciphers and the weak EAP-TTLS inner methods.
  2. If a device class needs one of them (MAB uses Process Host Lookup, not PAP), give it its own service and policy set.

Command line

This analyzer version writes no command text for this control. The steps above are the remediation it offers.

How to confirm the fix

  • In ISE: Policy > Policy Elements > Results > Authentication > Allowed Protocols > open the service and confirm the boxes; then the Live Logs show the method each session used.

Limits

  • No limitation is recorded for this control beyond the one that applies to all of them: it reads a configuration export.
