Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
v2c traps carry a community string in clear text and cannot be authenticated or encrypted. Anyone on the path can read the events, and the community string is often the same one the device answers polls with.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Move the profile to SNMP v3 with authentication and privacy.
- Create a v3 user on each trap receiver with the same engine settings.
- Retire the v2c community once every receiver takes v3 traps.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI
set shared snmptrap <object-name> version v3 server <server-name> manager <server-address>set shared snmptrap <object-name> version v3 server <server-name> user <snmp-user>
An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show shared snmptrap <object-name>Values to fill in4
- <object-name>
- The object's name, as it appears on your firewall
- <server-name>
- The server entry's name
- <server-address>
- The server's address
- <snmp-user>
- The version 3 user
Before you type it1
- Version 3 needs a user with an authentication and a privacy passphrase, which you set yourself.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the profile shows version v3 and a user on each manager.
- Confirm each receiver logs a test trap after the change.
Limits
- No limitation is recorded for this control beyond the one that applies to all of them: it reads a configuration export.
Compliance references
No benchmark recommendation is mapped to this control in this version.
