Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
SNMP v2c authenticates with a community string sent in clear text and has no encryption. Anyone who can read the traffic can poll the device.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Switch the SNMP access setting to v3.
- Configure authentication and privacy on the v3 user.
- Restrict SNMP to the monitoring subnet with permitted IPs.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI
set deviceconfig system snmp-setting access-setting version v3 views <view-name> view <view-entry> oid <oid>set deviceconfig system snmp-setting access-setting version v3 users <snmp-user> view <view-name>
An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show deviceconfig system snmp-settingValues to fill in4
- <view-name>
- A name for the view
- <view-entry>
- A name for the view entry
- <oid>
- The object identifier the view covers
- <snmp-user>
- The version 3 user
Before you type it1
- Version 3 needs a user with an authentication and a privacy passphrase, which you set yourself.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the monitoring system supports SNMP v3 before switching.
- Test a poll from the monitoring host after the change.
Limits
- The community string itself is redacted and never reported.
