Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
Without a monitor the device cannot notice that the far end has stopped answering. Traffic keeps being routed into the tunnel interface, and where a backup path exists the failover it was built for never triggers.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Enable tunnel monitoring with a destination address that answers on the far side.
- Attach a monitor profile whose action matches your intent, wait-recover or fail-over.
- Confirm the monitored address is reachable only through this tunnel, so the monitor tests the path it is meant to.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI
set network tunnel ipsec <object-name> tunnel-monitor enable yesset network tunnel ipsec <object-name> tunnel-monitor destination-ip <far-end-address>
An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show network tunnel ipsec <object-name>Values to fill in2
- <object-name>
- The object's name, as it appears on your firewall
- <far-end-address>
- An address at the far end of the tunnel to monitor
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the monitor reports the configured tunnel as reachable after the change.
Limits
- This reads the configured tunnel only. A configuration export records nothing about whether a security association exists.
