Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

IKEv1 has no built-in protection against the identity exposure of aggressive mode, reauthenticates less cleanly, and receives no further hardening from the standards bodies. IKEv2 is the supported protocol on every current platform.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. Confirm the peer supports IKEv2.
  2. Change both ends to IKEv2 in one coordinated change window.
  3. Where the peer cannot move, record the exception and pair it with the strongest available IKEv1 proposal.

Command line

PAN-OS CLI

set network ike gateway <object-name> protocol version ikev2

An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.

Read it back

show network ike gateway <object-name>
Values to fill in1
<object-name>
The object's name, as it appears on your firewall
Before you type it1
  • The far end has to offer the same proposal, so coordinate the change with whoever runs it.

How to confirm the fix

  • Confirm the tunnel negotiates on IKEv2 after the change.

Limits

  • Whether the peer supports IKEv2 is set on the peer and has to be confirmed with the peer administrator.
