Benchmark reference

Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

Renewal needs lead time for issuance, import and reference updates. Once a certificate used by a decryption or portal service lapses, clients that check it reject it.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. Request the replacement now, so issuance delays do not consume the remaining window.
  2. Import the new certificate alongside the current one and cut references over before expiry.
  3. Record the next renewal date in whatever calendar the team actually reads.

Command line

PAN-OS CLI, standalone firewall, vsys1

set vsys vsys1 ssl-tls-service-profile <profile-name> certificate <new-certificate-name>

An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.

Read it back

show vsys vsys1 certificate <object-name>
Values to fill in3
<object-name>
The object's name, as it appears on your firewall
<profile-name>
Which profile to change. A firewall carries several of each kind.
<new-certificate-name>
The name of the certificate you imported
Before you type it1
  • No command renews a certificate. Import the new file, then point the profile at it.

How to confirm the fix

  • Confirm the new certificate is imported and referenced before the old one lapses.

Limits

  • The ninety day window is a default and can be adjusted to match your renewal process.
  • The assessment date, not the current date, is what the comparison uses.
