Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
A rule that allows traffic arriving from an untrusted zone but attaches no antivirus, anti-spyware or vulnerability protection profile leaves the exposed service with no inspection in front of it.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Attach a profile group containing antivirus, anti-spyware and vulnerability protection.
- Set the vulnerability protection profile to block critical, high and medium severity signatures.
- Confirm the threat signatures are updating on schedule.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI, standalone firewall, vsys1
set vsys vsys1 rulebase security rules <object-name> profile-setting group <profile-group>An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show vsys vsys1 rulebase security rules <object-name>Values to fill in2
- <object-name>
- The object's name, as it appears on your firewall
- <profile-group>
- The profile group to attach
Before you type it1
- The group you attach should carry antivirus, anti-spyware and vulnerability protection.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the zone named in this finding really does face the internet.
- Confirm the threat prevention subscription is active before relying on the profile.
Limits
- Zone naming is used to infer internet exposure. A zone called external that is in fact a private partner link would be scored too high, so confidence is 0.9.
