Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

With configuration synchronization off, nothing keeps the two members aligned automatically. Whether they currently match depends entirely on somebody having mirrored every change by hand, and this file cannot show whether that happened: an export contains one peer and says nothing about the other's policy. What it does show is that the mechanism designed to guarantee the match is switched off, so the failover a customer is paying for rests on manual discipline rather than on the device.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. Enable configuration synchronization on the HA group.
  2. Reconcile the two members before enabling it, because the first sync overwrites one side.
  3. Confirm which member is the sync source before committing.

Command line

PAN-OS CLI

set deviceconfig high-availability group configuration-synchronization enabled yes

An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.

Read it back

show deviceconfig high-availability group
Before you type it1
  • Apply this to both members of the pair.

How to confirm the fix

  • Confirm the group reports configuration synchronization enabled.
  • Compare the running configuration of both members after the first sync.

Limits

  • This reads the configured setting, not whether the peers currently match.
  • A configuration export contains one peer. The other member's policy is outside this file, so no divergence is claimed here, only that nothing enforces the match.
