Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
An interface with an address and no zone cannot be referenced by any security rule, because PAN-OS matches on zones. Traffic arriving on it is not evaluated by the policy a reviewer reads.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Assign the interface to the zone that matches its role.
- If the interface is no longer in use, remove its address.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI, standalone firewall, vsys1
set vsys vsys1 zone <zone> network layer3 <interface>An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show vsys vsys1 zone <zone>Values to fill in2
- <zone>
- The zone this interface belongs in
- <interface>
- The interface to change
Before you type it1
- Once the interface is in a zone, policy applies to traffic that is passing today.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the zone assignment before committing, since it changes which rules apply.
Limits
- An interface staged for a planned change is legitimately unzoned, and this analysis cannot see whether the interface is administratively up.
