Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
A zone with interfaces attached and no zone protection profile has no flood or reconnaissance protection at the zone boundary. That protection is the layer that acts before a security rule is evaluated at all.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- Attach a zone protection profile with flood protection thresholds appropriate to the link.
- Start with monitoring-only thresholds and tighten once you have a baseline.
Command line
PAN-OS CLI, standalone firewall, vsys1
set vsys vsys1 zone <object-name> network layer3 zone-protection-profile <zone-protection-profile>An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.
Read it back
show vsys vsys1 zone <object-name>Values to fill in2
- <object-name>
- The object's name, as it appears on your firewall
- <zone-protection-profile>
- The zone protection profile to attach
Before you type it1
- Flood thresholds depend on what this link normally carries. Measure before you set them.
How to confirm the fix
- Confirm the thresholds do not trip under normal peak load before enforcing them.
Limits
- Zone protection is sometimes handled by an upstream device. The profile contents were not examined, only whether one is attached.
