Reads the export, not the device

ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.

Why it matters

Service any opens every TCP and UDP port for the matched applications. With application any as well, the rule restricts neither the application nor the port.

How to fix it

Web interface

The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.

  1. Set service to application-default when the applications are known.
  2. Otherwise attach explicit service objects for the ports in use.

Command line

PAN-OS CLI, standalone firewall, vsys1

set vsys vsys1 rulebase security rules <object-name> service <service>

An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. Nothing here commits. Review the candidate configuration, then commit it yourself.

Read it back

  • Narrowing this changes who reaches what. Confirm the new set covers the traffic the application needs.

How to confirm the fix

  • Confirm the applications on the rule declare their standard ports before switching to application-default.
  • Check the traffic log for denied sessions on non-standard ports after the change.

Limits

  • Rules whose action is deny are not flagged: a broad deny is usually correct.
