Reads the export, not the device
ConfigProof reads a configuration export. This control is evaluated against the objects in that file, and it reports what the file says. It does not connect to the device and sees no traffic, so a finding here describes the configuration, not what the firewall is doing right now.
Why it matters
A local FortiManager account with only a password is one phished or reused password away from control of every managed FortiGate's policy.
How to fix it
Web interface
The steps below are written for the web interface. A finding raised on your own export carries the same steps with your object names filled in.
- On the FortiManager CLI: config system admin user, edit the administrator, set two-factor-auth ftc-ftm (FortiToken Cloud) or the second factor your FortiManager is licensed for, next, end.
- Or authenticate administrators against a RADIUS, LDAP or TACACS+ server that asks for the second factor.
Command line
FortiOS CLI
config system admin useredit <administrator>set two-factor-auth ftc-ftmnextend
An example. Values in angle brackets are yours to supply; a finding on your own export fills in the names it read. FortiOS saves a change when you type next or end, with no separate commit. Read every line first.
Read it back
show system admin user <administrator>Values to fill in1
- <administrator>
- The administrator account to change
Before you type it1
- Keep one working administrator you can still sign in with.
How to confirm the fix
- Sign in as the administrator and confirm the second factor is asked for.
- show system admin user <administrator> shows the two-factor-auth setting.
Limits
- An administrator who signs in against a RADIUS, LDAP or TACACS+ server takes its second factor from that server, which the configuration does not show; such accounts are not judged.
